Verizon Fascinate: $199 on contract, plus buy-one-get-one!

Verizon Fascinate pricing

We just got some pricing info on the Verizon Samsung Fascinate, and it's about as you'd expect, with a bit of a twist. The fourth U.S. version of the Samsung Galaxy S will go for $199.99 on contract with Big Red. Plus, it'll be offered as buy-one-get-one/buy-one-get-any, which makes it fun for the whole family. And note that this is even more confirmation of the Sept. 9 launch date that we broke last week.

Sprint: Epic 4G one of its best first-day sellers

Sprint Epic 4G

Sprint this morning trumpeted the Epic 4G, saying "it became one of Sprint's best-selling devices for first-day sales." Redundancy notwithstanding, no numbers were given, and that's sort of the same vague cheerleading we saw after the launch of the Evo 4G (even with revised remarks). But there's no denying the Epic 4G is a major player -- we thought as much in our complete review -- and we expect to see this one around for a while. [Sprint]

Motorola clears up Droid X battery tab confusion with design change

Motorola Droid X with new battery tab

Remember this one? When the Motorola Droid X launched in July, it did so with a little confusion surrounding how to remove the battery. We had report after report of people ripping off the tab -- which was light brown and mere said "pull" -- without knowing what it was for, which is to remove the battery.

But there's been a modification, and the tab is now red and says "Battery Release," with a little "do not cut" logo. Hopefully that will clear things up. For everybody else, we've got our instructional video after the break. Thanks, G!

For as easy as Android can make your life, the simple task of getting photos, video and music from your computer to your phone isn't quite as straightforward as it should be. Skype Mobile update does not allow use of Wifi after all [updated]

Skype Mobile for AndroidSkype Mobile for Android

We had a bad feeling that when the Skype Mobile app for Android was updated late last night and seemingly allowed calls over Wifi, things were a little too good to be true. And sure enough, they were. At left here is the original description for Version 1.5.0.4, which tells of "Simultaneous Wifi & 3G." That would have been a big deal because the app so far had only worked over Verizon 3G, forcing you to use its data connection, which of course you're paying for. And that, of course, is ridiculous, though you can see Verizon's intent -- it keeps you from buying an unactivated phone and using it as a Wifi VOIP phone when instead you could be burning through your monthly data allotment.

But lo and behold, we have a couple of unactivated Verizon phones here, and sure enough, they freak out when you try to use the updated Skype client. And just a few hours after the initial update, the app description has changed to read "Wifi runs while app is on 3G." So it's just as we feared -- your Wifi connection remains, but you can't actually use it. Shenanigans, indeed.

Update: Skype has published details on the update. In addition to being able to maintain a Wifi connection, you get incoming caller ID, copy-paste in IMs, emoticons, country names and flags when calling internationally, and the ability to set your location as your mood message.

There's no escaping it -- you have to compare the Samsung Galaxy Tab to Apple's iPad. One has sold millions in mere months. The other is hoping to break Android into the tablet market big-time. After the break, we match them up, spec for spec.
