Sprint gets own tab in the Android Market
Published on Saturday, July 24, 2010 by Phil Nickinson No, you're not seeing things. Sprint phones will now see a "Sprint" tab in the Android Market instead of the (preferred by many) "Downloads" tab. It's the same on Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile Android phones (at least the ones I have). To get to your downloads, just tap the menu button on your phone. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!...
Original Flight Control coming to Android
Published on Saturday, July 24, 2010 by Phil Nickinson Airplane-landing games are a dime a dozen now, but the original and best is coming to Android. You might want to consider quitting your job to free up time for this one. [Firemint via @alexessory] Thanks, Rene!Posted originally at Android CentralSponsored by Android Cases and Accessories ...
Apple can’t hold the Droid X right either
Published on Friday, July 23, 2010 by Phil Nickinson Look. We're really not going to get dragged back into this whole Antennagate thing. Because let's face it: Asking Apple to test somebody else's phone is like leaving a bottle of Campari in the same building as a certain Crackberry.com founder. (Or a cheeseburger in front of this site's editor.) We're pretty sure we know what the result is going to be. For w...
PSA: Android Market DDA updated; developers need to log in
Published on Friday, July 23, 2010 by Phil Nickinson A PSA for all you application developers out there: Google has updated the Android Market Developer Distribution Agreement "in preparation for some work we’re doing on introducing new payment options, which we think developers will like." Here's what's been added, though damned if we understand it. In Section 13.1, “authorized car...
Galaxy S tip: Don’t miss a notification because your phone’s asleep
Published on Friday, July 23, 2010 by Phil Nickinson One thing missing from the Galaxy S class of phones -- and this will hurt some of your more than others -- is proper LED notification. Sorry, it's just not there. If you miss a call, or get an e-mail or text message, you're on your own to wake the phone to check. Unless ... You install a simple little app from madmack at XDA Developers. It pops a small red squar...
Google Nexus One retrospective
Published on Friday, July 23, 2010 by Phil Nickinson Call the Nexus One what you want -- failed experiment, iClone, ahead of its time, whatever. We'll call it a solid phone, born from Google's desire to "shake up" the smartphone market, both in terms of available hardware and the way it was sold to consumers. Some of it worked. Some of it didn't. We're not going to recap the life of every Android smartph...

Review: HTC Skin Case for Evo 4G
Published on Friday, July 23, 2010 by Phil Nickinson The HTC Skin Case for the Sprint Evo 4G is one of the easiest ways to protect your phone. It's a basic rubber skin that fits around the Evo with cutouts for the camera, speaker, flashes, kickstand and ports, and it leaves the phone's massive 4.3-inch touchscreen completely uncovered, so you don't lose any usability. Marrying the Evo to the skin case is...
Why ‘open source’ isn’t always ‘open’
Published on Friday, July 23, 2010 by Phil Nickinson Our pal Robert Werlinger from sister site PreCentral.net has been at the O'Reilly Open Source Conference this week in Portland, Ore., and sat in on the "Your Smartphone May Not Be as Open as You Think" session. And, obviously, that's been a topic of discussion in these parts, what with the whole Droid X eFuse conspiracy, and the usual general Android ha...
Know your buttons
Published on Friday, July 23, 2010 by Phil Nickinson Every Android phone has a standard set of buttons at the bottom. They may be physical -- with parts that move -- or they may be capacitive, reacting to your touch. The order may change, but the functions are the same. You'll find: Home: Returns to the main home screen. Hold down to see your most recently used apps. (Tip: Try tapping it again once you'r...
