Motoblur is alive an well in Motorola's latest European offering, the Defy. The phone is shipping with Android 2.1 ("Eclair"), which isn't quite yet inexcusable, but we're getting close. But, those looking to use their phone in places where it might be exposed to the elements should take a second look at the device, as Moto is saying it is "virtually lifeproof". The phone has a 3.7-inch Gorilla Glass touch screen that is dust, scratch, and even water resistant. It can even take being under a full meter (thats about a yard, folks) of water for up to 30 minutes. To round out the feature list, the phone will come with a 800MHz OMAP 3610 processor and Swype preinstalled. Look for it across Europe in Q4 2010. [Motorola via Engadget]

We'd like to say we're excited at the news that Sony Ericsson on Twitter confirmed "that the upgrade to Android 2.1 [for the Xperia X10] is due for release before the end of September this year."
OK, it's not that we're not excited, it's just that it's not new. It was way back in June that SE announced a change to the Xperia upgrade timeline, from early Q4 to late Q3. As September is the last month in the third quarter, it looks like we're still on that schedule.
Hang in there, folks. Your phones will be upgraded to an operating system that's not the newest in the next month or so. In the meantime, you can check out our latest (and second) hands-on with the X10 for AT&T. [Twitter via Engadget]

Specifications and an image of the Motorola Quench XT5 have trickled out, and it looks like another low- to mid-range handset that we'll love to hate. Besides what you see in the picture above, the Quench XT5 will come running Eclair (Android 2.1), have 256 MB RAM and 523 MB of ROM, FM radio and DivX playback ability. No word on processor speed. One thing to note -- this doesn't appear to have any sort of NinjaPhilBlur, so you vanilla fans in Europe may be pleased with it. Yes, Europe, as this appears to be the successor to the original Quench, so we expect it to hit Europe first -- and there's no word on a Cliq or Dext version just yet. [CellPassion via Engadget]

This shouldn't come as much of a surprise, as the Motorola Devour already is listed as end-of-life, but now it officially won't be getting an upgrade to Android 2.1. In happier news, the Backflip is slated for an update in the third quarter, and the Cliq and Cliq XT should see their updates in late Q3/early Q4.
There are a slew of other changes to Motorola's roll-out chart, including the Milestone getting Froyo in the fourth quarter, so check it all out at the source link.
And to offer whatever consolation we can to you poor Devour owners, a present, after the break. [Motorola]

While we drool over all the new phones we hear about, the Thunder prototype units the Engadget got their hands on are certainly near the top of the want list, and they're sharing a really nice preview of what's to come. Ever since we first heard about the Thunder back in April, the curved glass screen and sleek styling have stood out and even though these are just prototype units, they sure look good.
We do know it has a Snapdragon clocked at 1 Ghz, 802.11n, 8 MP camera (with flash), and a 1400 mAh battery, but things like the final screen resolution and version of Android are still up in the air.
Be sure to check out the video and image gallery. [engadget]

The bad news: The U.S. version of the Dell Streak launched with Android 1.6. The good news: It might skip Android 2.1 altogether and go straight to Android 2.2. Normally I'd never pass up a perfectly good Eclair (to which my waistline would sadly nod its head in agreement), but in this case I'll make an exception. A leap to Froyo would make sense, and let's hope we start seeing a few other phones (cough, Xperia X10) follow suit. [@LionelAtDell via Engadget]

The Motorola Glam, which probably has a 0 percent chance of ever appearing here in the States, continued its Asian rollout by launching in South Korea. The phone comes with the standard plate of high-end specs we have come to expect from Android phones these days, including:
The phone will be exclusively available on the carrier SK Telecom when it hits stores. [AndroidOS.IN]

Kmart and Android are names you probably never though would be uttered in the same breath, but in their weekly circular the discount retailer has a 7-inch tablet, running Android 2.1 on sale for $149.99. Before you say "meh" and click away, this one has a bit better specs than what we've seen for ultra-cheap Android tablets so far:
The weekly Kmart ad shows the tablet on sale through July 31. I've been on the phone with every Kmart in a 200 mile radius, and it seems none has received any stock as of yet, but several stores claim they should have them on the shelves by Thursday July 29. With a little bit of hacking, and a little bit of Froyo, this might be the first Android tablet worth buying. If we can get our hands on one we'll be sure to let you know. [Augen US via Engadget and Kmart] Thanks Charles!

Your eyes aren't playing tricks on you, that's really Android 2.1 (Eclair) + Motoblur running on a Motorola Cliq. It's not official (of course) but reports are mostly good -- you might have to recreate your Blur account, and it's pretty laggy until everything gets settled in. You'll have to be rooted and able to install custom ROMs, but a pre-rooted, semi-official leaked build of Blur 2.1 might just be worth it. You can grab it HERE, and I suggest mirroring it ASAP. [ModMyMobile] Thanks Joe for the link and S for the pic!
Update: Engadget's loaded it up on a Dext. Check out their hands-on video.

For those of you with an HTC Hero on Cellular South, let it be known at Android 2.1 is now ready for you (albeit a little later than we'd expected). It's not an over-the-air update, unfortunately, but we'll take what we can get, won't we?
You'll want to make sure your phone is well-charged before you apply the update (50 percent or higher, please, and Cellular South suggests you install the HTC Sync program beforehand, just in case. CS also is pushing the free trial of My Backup in the Market to back up your contacts, again, just in case. (Can't hurt, but if you're sync'd to Google, you're likely good to go.
You'll also be getting MMS support along with the update, but it's going to cost you $5.99 a month on your bill.
You can get more info on the Cellular South Hero here, and download the Android 2.1 update here. [via Facebook] Thanks, @FirstKlassVT
