HTC schedules press event on February 16th at Mobile World Congress

We were expecting HTC to have another big announcement at Mobile World Congress this year, so we were not that surprised when a tipster sent us a copy of HTC's press conference invitation this morning. The PDF we received was in German, but from what we would tell, the invitation did not indicate what HTC would be unveiling at Mobile World Congress. HTC goes mention that there will be new devices and innovations. HTC's press conference will be held at 10:30 on February 16th. Last year, HTC unveiled the HTC Touch Diamond2 and Pro2 at Mobile World Congress. According to HTC's leaked 2010 roadmap, they have three new Windows Mobile handsets slated to launch in the first half of the year, but that number is overshadowed by the five Android handsets that should launch before July. At this point, we can only speculate on what HTC will unveil on February 16th, but we feel confident in saying that both Windows Mobile and Android devices will be making appearances. Thanks Axel for the tip.

HTC Bravo unveiled: images, details and launch date

Back in early December, we got our first look at the HTC Bravo (http://htcsource.com/index.php?option=com_content task=view id=847 Itemid=58). The first images were renderings in HTC’s 2010 roadmap documents that were leaked. Now, the first live blurry camera images of the Bravo have surfaced with a few details about when we might see the handset. According to Omio, the HTC Bravo will be joining the SONY Ericsson XPERIA X10 for a late March launch on T-Mobile UK. T-Mobile will most likely rename the HTC Bravo (as they do with all their HTC devices) but the handset will be pretty much identical to the Nexus One with the exception of an optical joystick and HTC’s Sense UI, but it will be shipping with Android 2.1. According to Omio, the HTC Bravo will be available on T-Mobile UK in late March for free on a £35 per month service plan. Follow the jump for larger images and some feature highlights from HTC’s leaked roadmap. KnitDROID Beta 1 comes to life

About a week ago, I posted a few pictures on Twitter of a little project my wife has been working on. My wife knits a little, making scarves and hats from time to time, so I thought I'd put in a little request. I'd seen little knit sackboys from Little Big Planet, so I thought it would be nice to own my own knit Android stuffed robot. My wife went to work, trying to find the perfect pattern for my little DROID and came up with something a few days later. After a few false starts KnitDROID Beta 1 was born. At this point, the wife is still trying to perfect things, but I keep reminding her that it's a Beta. She's debating whether she will make a few to sell since the time needed to make KnitDROID would make the little robot a bit pricey. If you would be interested in purchasing a KnitDROID, let us know in the comments or on Twitter. Be sure to let us know how much you would be willing to pay. Any thoughts and suggestions would be gladly welcomed.

HTC Supersonic to land on Sprint’s 4G Network, feature Android 2.1

The HTC Supersonic is not new to us by any means. The code name was leaked with an early Android 2.0 build of the HTC Hero. Apparently, the HTC Supersonic will come to life Sprint's network and will be the first Android powered phone to be equipped with a WiMax chip. A tipster has informed Engadget that the HTC Supersonic is “Snapdragon fast”, features a 4.3 inch display, features a kickstand on the back (similar to the Verizon HTC Imagio), and will be running on Android 2.1 with HTC Sense. The HTC Supersonic would not be the first WiMax equipped handset for HTC. Last year they released the WM6.1 HTC Max 4G in Russia. It's nice to see HTC still leasing the way in bringing 4G capable handsets to market, but due to Sprint's limited 4G coverage, I'm not sure how many happy customers they would really have. HTC Espresso headed to T-Mobile as the myTouch Slide

The Android development community has been playing around with a leaked “Espresso” build for some time now, but we have never really known when or where this handset would be released. Initial speculation pegged it to be a brand new handset, but others simply slated it to be an Android 2.1 build for the HTC Hero with Sense. TmoNews is now reporting that the Espresso is actually the code name for a new Android phone that will launch on T-Mobile's network some time this spring. The release name for the HTC made handset will most likely be the myTouch Slide of myTouch2. Two different sources indicate that the HTC Espresso will have a QWERTY keyboard, though they don't agree on the keyboard's implementation. One claims that is will be a simple slide out QWERTY, while the other indicates that it could “have a sidekick type keyboard.” I have never been a fan of the SideKick, but I've always thought that's its unique swivel screen was quite fun. Either way, it look like T-Mobile is gearing up to finally get the original G1 off shelves and replace it with another QWERTY equipped Android powered phone. Source: TmoNews Note: image shown in this post is only a only a quick photo chop of what a SideKick would look like with myTouch stylings.

T-Mobile myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition landing January 20

T-mobile is finally ready to launch the myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition. The handset is scheduled to launch on January 20th for $179.99 with a new two year agreement. From what we can tell, hardware is pretty much the same as the original, but the fender Limited Edition does feature a 3.5mm headphone jack to make music that much more enjoyable, 288MB of RAM and will be sporting a Fender branded shell. To make sure your music experience is up to snuff with other smartphones on the market, the myTouch 3G Fender Limited edition has a new customized music player created by HTC, a 16GB microSD card for all your music, and preloaded music from Eric Clapton, Wyclef Jean, Avril Lavigne and Brad Paisley. T-Mobile is also throwing in a customized version of the DoubleTwist music syncing computer application so that you can easily sync up all your tunes and even transfer in your iTunes playlists. The January 20th launch of the T-Mobile myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition will be accompanied by a new commercial featuring Eric Clapton. It's nothing revolutionary and does nothing to call out the differences between the original and the Fender Limited Edition, but at least it's nice to see T-Mobile still backing the myTouch line.

Flurry reports Nexus One sells only 20,000 units in first week

It's been a little over a week that the HTC made Nexus One has been on sale through Google's website. It's the first handset which can be purchased exclusively from Google and will not be showing up at retail at all. Flurry has just released their first week sales estimates for the Nexus One and things arn't looking so good. According to Flurry's numbers, Google only sold around 20,000 Nexus One handsets last week, When you compare those numbers to the iPhone 3GS, DROID, or even the myTouch 3G, the Nexus One looks to be a complete flop. But the Nexus One's sales numbers can't really be compared to its competition. Google has chosen to break from the traditional distribution style, only offering the Nexus One online. The majority of consumers are user to walking into their local carrier store or big box retailer when looking for a new handset. Simply having a phone on a store shelf or on display is like rolling out a marketing campaign. Yes, Google has taken over the internet, pushing the Nexus One through Adsense on millions on websites, but that's simply not enough. If Google really want to change the way people buy phones, they'll need to do a little more mainstream (TV, print, radio) promotion for the Nexus One.

Verizon rolls out ROM update 1.17.605.1 for HTC DROID Eris

Verizon has started rolling out an updated ROM for the DORID Eris by HTC. Don't get too excited, as this ROM update is only a minor bug fix and does not add any additional functionality to the handset. The ROM update addressed the issue: Rare instances where the display locked or appeared to be in an out-of-service states when attempting to wake up the DROID ERIS from screen saver mode no longer occurs. It's not the most exciting bug fix in the world, but at least Verizon and HTC want to make sure your Android phone work properly while you patiently await your Android 2.1 update. Check out the Verizon DROID Eris support page (http://verizonwireless.com/droiderissupport) if you need help downloading and installing the update.
