New Sprint Football Live free for all Sprint data subscribers
Sprint has again updated its Sprint Football Live application, and it wants to remind everyone that the services are free to every Sprint data subscriber. Back in April, Verizon wrangled the official NFL blessing away from Sprint, and many thought that would be the end of football on Sprint, but they have been working and improving their Football Live app and it seems to offer some unique content
- Live telecasts of NCAA games via ESPN TV
- Game center for every NFL and collegiate game
- Scores and schedule for all NFL teams, and 120 college teams
- Exclusive content like player blogs, and team videos

Android takes the lead from BlackBerry in Q2, analyst firm reports
According to NPD, one of the largest consumer market research companies, Android phones smartphones (or superphones, as Google likes to call it), has out sold the BlackBerry in Q2's sales. Almost every one in three smartphones that are sold today, has Android installed on the device.
The top 5 Android phones sold in the second quarter were:
- Motorola Droid
- HTC Droid Incredible
- HTC EVO 4G
- HTC Hero
- HTC Droid Eris
It looks like Verizon's and Sprint's marketing efforts have really paid off. (Not to mention HTC, eh?) It's no surprise the Motorola Droid is at the top of that list. Especially with all those Droid commercials Verizon kept on pumping out every few weeks. We're just pretty surprised the HTC Droid Incredible made number 2 on that list. With all those supply shortages with the AMOLED screens and all.
Let's see if RIM's new marketing campaign and the launch of BlackBerry 6 will help them with sales in Q3. They need something other than BBM to help them now. Boast about your Android phone and all of its first-placeness in the comments section. [Business Wire]

Cellular South Hero gets Android 2.1
For those of you with an HTC Hero on Cellular South, let it be known at Android 2.1 is now ready for you (albeit a little later than we'd expected). It's not an over-the-air update, unfortunately, but we'll take what we can get, won't we?
You'll want to make sure your phone is well-charged before you apply the update (50 percent or higher, please, and Cellular South suggests you install the HTC Sync program beforehand, just in case. CS also is pushing the free trial of My Backup in the Market to back up your contacts, again, just in case. (Can't hurt, but if you're sync'd to Google, you're likely good to go.
You'll also be getting MMS support along with the update, but it's going to cost you $5.99 a month on your bill.

Credo Mobile to carry the HTC Hero
It's always great to see Android spreading it's robo-love to the smaller guys, and starting today Credo Mobile is carrying the HTC Hero (CDMA). The Hero, running Android 2.1, will be offered at $79.99 with a two year agreement, and plans (voice only) start at $59.99 monthly. Credo Mobile is a small nationwide carrier that uses the Sprint network for voice and data. They pride themselves on their social conscience, and in 2009 the company donated $2,680,211 to nonprofit groups from it's revenue. HTC says to expect Android 2.2 updates by Christmas
Just because we see what looks like Froyo running on a phone with HTC Sense, doesn't mean it's right around the corner. The good folks over at Pocket-lint got some one-on-one time with Eric Lin, HTC's global PR and online community manager, at the recent Qualcomm Uplinq convention and got the straight scoop about Froyo on the new breed of HTC Sense phones.
At this point I'd like to ask everyone to turn off their WiFi...err I mean put down their pitchforks and rotten fruit. All sharp objects put away? HTC says to expect Froyo on their handsets by Christmas. And since you all are safely empty handed, he also says not to expect Gingerbread anytime this year. Allow me to quote Mr. Lin:
"It takes time to port all of our applications over to Froyo and then make sure that it is running well on each of our devices. That’s not like a one week kind of project. We need to make sure that our applications are taking advantage of the Froyo features. To make sure that they’re all running properly on the OS now that it’s a new version. And then to make sure that it's running on our hardware as well as we expect."
I'm no happier than you guys are, but at least we'll see Froyo on our Evos and Incredibles before Sony Ericsson updates the Xperia line. Feel free to discuss and vent in the comments. [Pocket-lint]
Update from Phil: Good lord, people. OK, we should have included the following line (but were trying to to steal all of Pocket-Lint's quotes). Said Mr. Lin: "I would believe that we would be done with our Froyo updates before Christmas." Updates could come next week. Or next month. Or the month after. Regardless, everybody have a little patience. You'll get Froyo in due time. This reaction is why we never get more than a ballpark time line.

HTC developer site updated with kernel sources to Evo 4G and HTC Hero
Better late than never, HTC has released the Linux kernel source code for the HTC Evo 4G and both GSM and CDMA HTC Hero updates. This should allow the development community to address and improve some current issues (30 FPS cap anyone?) as well as work on new features to add (native JIT and Froyo for the Hero maybe?). For any of you guys that gave in to the dark side and rooted your phone, be on the lookout for new treats from your favorite developers and ROM cookers. CyanogenMod 6 (Froyo) status update
If you use a custom ROM on your Android phone, you should know about CyanogenMod. If you don't, go hit Google now, then come right back. (pretty freakin' sweet, huh?) With the drop of the Froyo (Android 2.2) source code everyone is patiently waiting for the code wizards behind the CyaongenMod project to give us the kind of custom goodness we've become used to. To quell the mountain of inquiries, Cyanogen himself has updated the CyanogenMod homepage with a progress report.
The condensed version? Things are going well. The Nexus One and Droid ports "just work," the Dream/Sapphire port has everything but one minor issue working, Wes Garner has the Slide (MyTouch 3G slide) port well underway, and ports for the Desire, Incredible, and Evo have no status report as of yet. Also, we're told to expect some experimental releases (for the Nexus One and Droid most likely) by the weekend. (YAY!) Fine tuning the MinFree settings (improving on Android’s multitasking)
Hey guys! Jerry back with another neat trick you can do on your Android phone. This one helps keep things running smoothly, and gives us some user control over Android's internal task killer. Like most things that affect the low level operation of Android, this one requires root, but it's a good read even for you folks who don't feel the need to root (and break your warranty!) because you just might have a better understanding of what's going on behind the scenes. Open up a couple extra tabs on your browser, get your phone (and maybe even your USB cable) ready and follow the break.
Oh, and a warning: This is pretty low-level stuff. It's not hard to do, but what it does is a bit advanced. Don't say we didn't warn you.

Sprint Hero, Moment won’t get Froyo
We imagine there are quite a few pitchforks being raised right about now. Sprint dropped the bad news on Twitter that while the new Evo 4G will be getting Android 2.2 (which was already announced anyway), the Samsung Moment and HTC Hero will not. Sorry, folks. That's just the way it is. But the good news is you can head over to your favorite forums -- ahem -- and get instructions for rooting and ROMing for the Hero and the Moment.
