Verizon announces it’s pushing Droid update to enable Flash

Droid Flash update

Verizon this morning made it official: The update for the original Droid that will enable you to officially run Adobe Flash is being pushed out. Here's the word:

Verizon Wireless has begun pushing an update today to the DROID by Motorola (introduced November 2009) that will allow customers to download Adobe Flash 10.1 via Android Market. Flash Player 10.1 provides access to millions of sites with rich content including animations, casual games, videos, rich internet applications, audio and much more.

Get your update yet? Let's hear it in the forums.

Slew of Verizon phones may see end of life in March 2011

Verizon EOL list

A handful of Verizon Android smartphones appear to have their end-of-life dates hung over their heads. Phones that already have shuffled off this mortal coil are the HTC Droid Eris (June 16) and original Droid (August 6).

And a handful of phones -- the Droid Incredible, LG Ally, Droid 2 and Droid X -- apparently are slated for EOL on March 31, 2011. (Edit: Yes, 2011, not 2010.) That's give the Droid Deuce a mere seven-month lifespan, which isn't out of the question, given that the original Droid isn't even a year old yet.

Then there's the Motorola Devour, whose EOL date is listed as March 1, 2011. Only, we've already seen it listed as being under EOL, and we'd be very surprised if that March date is correct. So what does that mean? Who knows. And who knows how firm these March 2011 dates are. And either way, it's not like your phone will stop working come next spring. [Phonedog]

Verizon to release update tomorrow to bring Flash to original Droid

Adobe Flash update for Droid

Motorola Droid owners have been anxiously awaiting an update for Verizon that will bring support for Adobe Flash. We reported last week that Verizon officially announced that the update would be the second one to come after the initial Froyo roll-out. We knew that it was coming, we just didn't have a date.

Well, Droid-Life has been slipped a screen shot from Verizon stating that the update will be released tomorrow, Aug 24. Great news for Droid owners, who want to add Flash to their mobile experience. Be on the lookout for the update tomorrow! [Droid-Life]

[Ed. note: Any time we use the words "Verizon," "update" and "date" in the same sentence, our mothers and lawyers remind us that there's a better than average chance that we'll get through the target day without anything actually happening. Just saying.]

QuestforStars launches Motorola Droid into space

droidspace

You may remember the nauseating video that we saw of the Nexus One that was strapped to a rocket. And now, the folks at QuestforStars.com have taken it one step above and sent a Motorola Droid into space with a GPS tracking system and digital camera into space, and recorded the whole thing. The Droid was loaded with an application called LapseDroid, which they used to take time lapsed photography of the journey to share with us. While the initial journey, shown in the video after the break, didn't go quite exactly as planned, they do have intentions of upgrading some equipment and trying this again. [via QuestforStars]

Droid 1 back up for sale; Droid Incredible back in stock

Looks like Verizon still had a bunch of original Droids in stock, as the phone has once again show its face on the carrier's website with a nice discount to $150. Since the Nexus One has passed, the Motorola Droid is now the only phone you can get (in the U.S. at least) with stock Android goodness.

Also, the saga of the Droid Incredible being on backorder have pretty much ended. The DInc is now back in stock with only a day's wait before shipping. If the PhilBlur-ified Droid X or Droid 2 don't float your boat, you have two other great options waiting for you past the link. [Verizon Wireless]

Droid 2 benchmark tests

Droid 2 benchmark tests

Here you go, folks, a slew of benchmark tests with the Motorola Droid 2. We're doing this batch with a quorum of Android 2.2 devices -- the original Droid, the Droid 2, the Nexus One and the Evo 4G.

One pretty major caveat, however, is that the Linpack test doesn't appear to be working properly with the Droid and Droid 2, both of which use TI OMAP processors. The Nexus One and Evo 4G are scored just fine. You'll see what we mean, and if someone wants to explain things to us, we'll be at the bar. Video after the break.

Verizon confirms the Droid (OG) to get a second OTA — to bring Adobe Flash

Verizon confrims another OTA

Enter Chapter 3 of the on-again, off-again saga that is the Motorola Droid Froyo update -- Verizon has sent out an e-mail to it's business customers that says FRG01B is only the first step of a two part update, with part two bringing Adobe Flash support to the father of all modern Android phones.  Will this be the mythical FRG22?  Will this fully enable JIT?  Will Gilligan and company ever get off the island?  We just don't know.  But when we do, we'll tell ya.  [Phandroid]

Froyo updates resume for the original Motorola Droid

Motorola Droid Froyo update

Not sure what the delay was attributed to, but the Android 2.2 over-the-air update has apparently resumed for the original Motorola Droid. It's the same FRG01B build that we got last week (none of that FRG22 nonsense just yet), and it should just take you a few minutes to download and install. (See our hands-on with Froyo on the Droid.) So sit back, relax and wait for it to push down. Or frantically force your phone to check for updates. Or install it manually. Your call. [via Android Central Forums]

Adobe shows off Flash running on Droid 2

Adobe just put up a blog post showing off Flash 10.1 running on a brand-new Droid 2, which will come with it pre-installed. They went on to promise that the Droid X, Droid Incredible, the Galaxy S line, and the Milestone will see Flash "in the coming weeks," which is great news for those waiting for Froyo as it is a requirement for Flash. Personally, I am just waiting on Flash so I can get my Strong Bad fix on the go. Check out their video walkthrough after the break. [Adobe]

Droid’s Froyo update reportedly halted, new build coming next week?

Motorola Droid Android 2.2 updateHere we go again, folks. Remember how the Evo 4G first saw an "unofficial" Android 2.2 update before the good one pushed out this week? Looks like pretty much the same thing is going on with the original Motorola Droid.

Trident at Android Forums has it that a showstopper was found in the FRG01B build that came out on Tuesday, which explains why not many people actually got the update over the air. (FWIW: We did our update manually -- see our hands-on here.) And add to that the image sent to Droid Life that you see at right, showing a newer build, FRG22.

Whether FRG22 ends up being the build we finally see released? Well, we'll see. The good news is that just about everybody's in agreement that those of us who updated to FRG01B should be just fine and get another update shortly. Huzzah. [via Android Forums and Droid Life]
