Verizon has been pushing its "VCAST" video service for quite some time, and it just got a lot more desirable for NFL fans on Big Red. The new and improved "NFL Mobile" app will allow live streaming of the NFL Network and access to Video on Demand for free through the end of August, after which a $10 per month subscription to VCAST Videos will be required. Once the regular season starts, the app will allow subscribers to watch NFL RedZone, NFL Network, NBC's Sunday Night Football, and NFL Network's Thursday Night Football live. 

For users not willing to pay, the app will still feature live audio streams from games, along with score updates and news all the way to the Superbowl in February. Either way, Verizon Android users can get the app now via the "Verizon" section of the Market (sorry, no QR code or AppBrain links are available as this is Verizon-exclusive).

One might think that Verizon would have to keep some sort of "unlimited" data plan if they added tiers to their data pricing, if only to keep services like this viable for customers. But, only time will tell. Snag the app in Verizon's section of the Android Market. [Verizon]

Verizon has been hinting for some time that unlimited data is unsustainable, and it looks like it may be ready to make good on that statement. AT&T went from all-you-can eat data pricing to a tiered system with the launch of the iPhone 4 last month, and Verizon looks to be ready to do the same. There is no word on what the pricing would be, but one might guess we will see more information on this story before the Droid 2 lands. [Engadget]

Perhaps you remember this picture of the Motorola Devour. (Take your time. You'll find it.) This was just six months ago, when the mid-range Android phone was released on Verizon and even garnered its own Super Bowl ad. Today, it appears that the Devour and the original Droid -- which isn't even a year old -- are headed for the big smartphone meetup in the sky, with Verizon listing them as being "End of life."

Now, that doesn't mean your Droid sucks, or that it won't be supported. In fact, in the document leaked on DroidForums, it clearly lists the two phones under "Current devices with limited or no remaining shipments from the vendor." In the case of the Droid, that's hardly surprising, as we're expecting its sequel anytime now.

And while the Devour hardly was a head-turner (read our full review if you want to know how we really feel about it), it's a stark reminder of how short a lifespan phones can have. Hell, think about how many phones we've seen announced and/or released in the last month. Anyhoo, if you still want a Droid or Devour, better get 'em while you still can. Or, you know, you can wait a tad and get something newer and better. [DroidForums via DroidLife]

Verizon just updated its Droid website, DroidDoes.com, now that the Droid X has really landed. The new site is packed to the brim with Flash animation and immediately greets users by letting them know "Droidspace is a 3-D web environment". Then, you can (and should!) select the "activate full motion tracking 3-D" option and allow Flash to access your webcam. If you use a custom ROM on your Android phone, you should know about CyanogenMod.  If you don't, go hit Google now, then come right back.  (pretty freakin' sweet, huh?) With the drop of the Froyo (Android 2.2) source code everyone is patiently waiting for the code wizards behind the CyaongenMod project to give us the kind of custom goodness we've become used to.  To quell the mountain of inquiries, Cyanogen himself has updated the CyanogenMod homepage with a progress report.

The condensed version? Things are going well.  The Nexus One and Droid ports "just work," the Dream/Sapphire port has everything but one minor issue working, Wes Garner has the Slide (MyTouch 3G slide) port well underway, and ports for the Desire, Incredible, and Evo have no status report as of yet.  Also, we're told to expect some experimental releases (for the Nexus One and Droid most likely) by the weekend.  (YAY!)  Hit the source link to read the post and take a minute to thank Steve and the whole crew for their hard work! Droid users you've got another Froyo build to play with -- FRF84B.  (Eyes playing tricks on me.  Thanks for the correction darkcomartist.)  Yes, that number should look familiar, as it's the same build that was called the final for the Nexus One.  We have no idea if this will be the final version from Motorola, but if you've been unofficially beta testing Android 2.2 on your Droid, you might want to have a look.

So the Droid X isn't launching with Android 2.2. That's a bummer. And and it's not going to be available until "late summer." That's what we were told at Verizon's Droid X event, and it's what Verizon's saying in the internal document you see above. But the doc also says that the original Droid will get Android 2.2 (and Flash 10.1) sometime in July, which kind of goes against what we (are pretty sure we) heard today -- that the Droid and Droid X would get their updates together. But let's not look a gift horse in the mouth, m'kay? We'll take some Froyo for the Droid just as soon as we can get it. Big props to you know who.
