R2-D2 Droid 2 dock pictures revealed

R2-D2 Droid 2 dock

Verizon's R2-D2 version of the Motorola Droid 2 will be released September 30th, news w broke a few weeks back

Pictures have now begun to creep up showing off some of the R2-D2-specific accessories. The phone dock, pictured above, is one such item. It's style and color fits in with what the phone will look like and it even has a couple Star Wars references on the device in case you forgot where the phone got its inspiration.

How many of you will be springing for the R2-D2 version coming to Verizon at the end of the month? [Engadget]

Motorola unleashes new iPhone zinger in print ad

 New Droid 2 Ad

Remember how a certain fruit company used "There's an app for that" as a marketing slogan for the longest time? Well, Motorola has used a similar slogan in its latest ad in the Wall Street Journal to remind people that the Droid 2 can run full Adobe Flash 10.1. Personally, I would have gone with a certain gloved wrestler to show off Flash (with consumate v's), but to each their own. [@benforta via CrunchGear]

Motorola clears up Droid X battery tab confusion with design change

Motorola Droid X with new battery tab

Remember this one? When the Motorola Droid X launched in July, it did so with a little confusion surrounding how to remove the battery. We had report after report of people ripping off the tab -- which was light brown and mere said "pull" -- without knowing what it was for, which is to remove the battery.

But there's been a modification, and the tab is now red and says "Battery Release," with a little "do not cut" logo. Hopefully that will clear things up. For everybody else, we've got our instructional video after the break. Thanks, G!

Motorola Defy to hit Europe with water, damage resistance

 Motorola Defy

Motoblur is alive an well in Motorola's latest European offering, the Defy. The phone is shipping with Android 2.1 ("Eclair"), which isn't quite yet inexcusable, but we're getting close. But, those looking to use their phone in places where it might be exposed to the elements should take a second look at the device, as Moto is saying it is "virtually lifeproof". The phone has a 3.7-inch Gorilla Glass touch screen that is dust, scratch, and even water resistant. It can even take being under a full meter (thats about a yard, folks) of water for up to 30 minutes. To round out the feature list, the phone will come with a 800MHz OMAP 3610 processor and Swype preinstalled. Look for it across Europe in Q4 2010. [Motorola via Engadget]

Motorola announces the Milestone 2

Motorola Milestone 2

Motorola this morning announced the Milestone 2 (which actually first made an appearance last night), also known as the Droid 2 for everybody not on Verizon. No real surprises here. Same 1GHz TI OMAP processor, same Android 2.2, same Adobe Flash Player 2.2. In fact, if you want the full lowdown on the Milestone 2, simply read our Droid 2 review, and pretend it has as slightly older version of the don't-call-it-blur UI. More pics, and video after the break. [Motorola]

Motorola shows off the Milestone 2 in a video

Milestone 2

If you've been waiting for the GSM version of the Droid 2, you're in luck -- Motorola has shown off the Milestone 2 in two minutes of video.  With the same sliding keyboard, same camera with dual LED flash, same 1 GHz processor, same as we're used to from the original Droid / Milestone team.

With one big difference -- apparently if you change the colors of the launcher, not-blur becomes Blur, and Moto isn't afraid to call it such this time around.  We like the resizable widgets, and other cool things the Motorola home offers, so we won't complain too much.  Be sure to check out the video after the break.  Thanks Albert!

Update: Annnnnnd ... It's gone. Guess it was more of us showing it off than them. :p

Motorola warns of leaked Droid X Froyo; we show you how to roll back

Remember that leaked Froyo update that came out of the blue a few days ago for the Droid X? You do? Well, Motorola is really hoping you haven't installed it on your Droid X. Oh, wait -- you already installed it? If that's the case, Matt from the Motorola Owners' Forum has something to say:

WARNING: Do NOT load the leaked 2.2 upgrade that has been floating around on the Internets. There is currently no upgrade path from that load to the official 2.2 load that will be released by early September. Unless you have some plan to flash your phone back to the current official load, you could be stuck on the leaked version.

Rut ro, Raggy! Sounds like they're serious. The good news is that so are we, and we have instructions in our forums for rolling back to Android 2.1-update1. It takes just a couple of minutes, and you can find all the instructions here.

Oh yeah, and that Matt guy from Motorola, he mentioned "early September" for the official OTA update. So... that means for the rest of you -- just wait the few days. [Motorola Owners' Forum] via [Droid Life]

Better pictures of the Motorola XT300 slider emerge [video]

 Motorola slider

When we first saw the Motorola portrait slider in all its blurrycam glory, we were interested. It's high time a portrait slider rolls out for Android, and the red Droid eye means it's pretty much a given that this one will hit Verizon eventually.  To make things even more interesting, if the XT300 name is correct, it would indicate that there's a GSM version of this one out there as well.  Or the name could be wrong.  Or Motorola  no longer uses the XT name only for GSM phones.  That's how things go when you deal with rumors and make your best guess from pictures.

A few things we can tell for sure from the pictures and video though -- this one comes with no flash for the camera, has an excellent looking keyboard, a rear mounted trackpad, and some form of Blur, at least for the launcher.  We'll keep an eye out, as the form factor looks like something worth trying.  Be sure to hit the source link for a mess of pictures and video, and we have one of the vid's after the break.  [MobiFlip (German) via Engadget]

Trio of Android headed to Motorola’s Chinese “Ming” line

 Motorola Chinese phones

Here in the U.S., it can be easy to forget that there are many Android devices only sold overseas. Motorola just increased that number by three after announcing a trio of new "Ming" phones for three of China's largest carriers:

  • XT806 for China Telecom, pictured left
  • A1680 for China Unicom, pictured center
  • MT810 for China Mobile, pictured right

The MT810 is probably the most interesting of the three; it has a resistive touchscreen along with a  flip-down see-though capacitive touch screen. It will also be running OPhone OS 2.0, which is a Chinese modification of stock Android. The XT806 boasts a 3.2-inch screen at 300ppi while the A1680 is packing improved stylus handwriting recognition with Moto's SoftStylus software. Check out the full press release as well as detailed tech specs for each phone past the link. [Motorola]

Sapphire custom ROM running on Droid X

Sapphire custom ROM on Droid X

No, that wasn't a typo -- the Droid X, despite the manufacturer's best efforts, has been spied running a custom ROM, namely the Sapphire AOSP 2.2 ROM (see the Sapphire team's post here in the forums).  We love seeing the various hacking and independent development projects on all Android phones, but this one is a bit extra special since the Droid X was supposedly the unhackable phone.  Next I imagine we'll see dogs and cats living together and all sorts of madness!

Check out the video after the break of the big bad X booting up to AOSP glory.  [via @MennoMobile]
