We'd like to say we're excited at the news that Sony Ericsson on Twitter confirmed "that the upgrade to Android 2.1 [for the Xperia X10] is due for release before the end of September this year."
OK, it's not that we're not excited, it's just that it's not new. It was way back in June that SE announced a change to the Xperia upgrade timeline, from early Q4 to late Q3. As September is the last month in the third quarter, it looks like we're still on that schedule.
Hang in there, folks. Your phones will be upgraded to an operating system that's not the newest in the next month or so. In the meantime, you can check out our latest (and second) hands-on with the X10 for AT&T. [Twitter via Engadget]

Time to revisit and old friend, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. It's not often that you'll see us review the same phone twice, but this time we're making an exception. With the huge U.S. subscriber base of AT&T, there's a good chance at least a few of you will be picking this one up, and some recent firmware changes were made to address some of the issues we saw with the X10 the first time around. And we love playing with new Android phones, I won't lie to you.
The physical hardware hasn't changed since we looked at the X10 before. Still the same 1GHz Snapdragon, 4-inch LCD screen, 1 GB ROM/512 MB RAM, and a nice 8.1-megapixel camera with LED flash. And it stills feels great in your hand -- build quality and materials are always top notch with SE products. To top it all off, AT&T has included a great set of earbuds and mic, which you can see in the video after the break.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 has passed the testing of the FCC, and information (including the user manual and a mess of pictures) is available for your viewing pleasure. While the prototype looks a little different from the polished glamor shot when the X8 was announced by SE, the specs remain the same -- and that's a concern. The hardware is passable for a mid-range phone, but Android 1.6 is soo last decade (or at least last year). It's still worth a look. Here's a direct link to the user manual and here's one to the pictures. (Warning: They're PDFs.) [FCC via Engadget]

Sony Ericsson has announced earlier this month that the X10 Mini, and the X10 Mini Pro will soon be available in new colors. The Mini, (right) will be available with a gold shell, while the Mini Pro (left) will feature a pink sliding case. I'll tell anyone within earshot that I'm not 100 percent sure I like the trend to giant phones, and these sure do look nice. Too bad they only updated the case colors -- both the Mini and Mini Pro still run Android 1.6.
For what it's worth, the new colors should be available next month, and an update to Android 2.1 sometime before hell freezes over in Q4 of this year. SE -- we love your phones. They feel great, and have excellent call quality. Please realize that we Android fans need the OS updates more than we need food, and make phones that look this hot run a current version of the software! [SEMC blog]

Way back in February, Sony Ericsson announced the Xperia X10 Mini and all of its smallness. Today, Sony Ericsson announced that it has received the "European Mobile Phone 2010-2011" from the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA).This award isn't the first the for the mini. The mobile device already has been flaunitng its award for the "prestigious Red Dot Product Design Award 2010."
Here is what the EISA had to say about the Xperia X10 mini:
“Xperia X10 mini from Sony Ericsson is a very small and stylish mobile phone. Nonetheless, it delivers excellent performance with a comprehensive range of features such as GPS, Wi-Fi, 3G and a 5 megapixel camera with flash. The phone runs on the Android platform and offers users the full benefits of a much larger device although its touch screen size is just 2.55-inch (6.48 cm). Its small size and weight and variety of vivid case colours make it perfect for introducing the fairer sex to smartphone technology.”

After a long wait, AT&T and Sony Ericsson have finally launched the Xperia X10 here in the States. As a refresher, the phone sports a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, 4-inch TVT LCD screen, 8 GB of on-board memory paired with a 2 GB microSD card, and an 8-megapixel camera. Also important to remember: the phone is running on Android 1.6 ("Donut") right now along with Sony's Timescape and Mediascape UI's. Sony has been vague on when it would see Eclair and has made no mention of Froyo yet.
AT&T will get one into your hands today for $150 with a two-year contract, or you can get it off-contract for a surprisingly low $350. If you are interested, make sure to check out our hands-on of the phone from way back in April. [AT&T]

And sure enough, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is on its way to AT&T. (See our hands-on) The 4-inch phone is bringing its custom Android experience to the U.S. on Aug. 15, complete with 8-megapixel camera, LED flash, 8GB of on-board memory, 2GB microSD card, and the Timescape and Mediascape UIs.
The X10 will cost $149.99 after two-year contract and rebate. Off-contract pricing wasn't initially announced.
Also not announced was what version of Android will be on board at launch, though we have to assume it'll be the same Android 1.6 that we've previously seen, and hope that it'll be upgraded later this year. Full presser after the break. [PR News Wire]
Update: Remember that Sony Style countdown clock? Well, it skipped the final two hours, and indeed it was showing the X10. Interesting is that it's listing the phone for $129.99 -- $20 less than the press release, but maybe that's an in-store preorder special. Or not.

So Sony Style has this clock a countin' down, and judging from the reflection (and the smattering of "X10" from the HTML on the page), we could well be looking at the Xperia X10. When last we saw the X10, it was April, it was running Android 1.6, with no upgrade in sight (and the last official word we've had is late Q3), the software wasn't actually production-ready, we left the damn screen protector on -- basically, we were totally underwhelmed with what otherwise should have been an exciting phone.
But it's been rumored for AT&T for as long as we can remember, and maybe now we're going to see it. So wake up early Monday morning, folks (about 11:30 a.m. EDT), and we'll see what's in store. [Sony Style via Gizmodo]

Normally when we see celebrity smartphone unboxings we see names like Michaluk, Bohn, Ritchie and Nickinson. In this case, Sony Ericsson went out and got Maria Sharapova, who's a pretty good tennis player or something, to unbox the Xperia X10 Mini Pro. (See our own hands-on.) What she's got that the rest of us don't -- besides looks and game, of course -- remains to be seen. So what's up, SE? Lose our numbers? Anyhoo, check out the video after the break. (Oh, by the way, Maria -- that finger tapping things looks a little familiar.) [Sony Ericsson Product Blog via Androinica]

The good news: An update is rolling out the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 as we speak. The bad news: Nope, it's still stuck on Android 1.6. Here's what you are getting, though:
This update focuses on improving the general performance, speed and responsiveness of Xperia X10. For example, there are speed improvements in messaging tasks and camera UI. In addition we add a free back up and restore application so you’ll never lose your settings and information. In selected markets, PlayNow™ with premium apps and games will also be added.
Better than nothing, we guess. But as we talk more and more about devices starting to get Froyo, the wait for Eclair becomes that much harder to stomach. [Sony Ericsson Product Blog]
